Tip Sheet for Your Headshot Session

This is meant to provide very quick tips to prep you for your headshot session.

YOUR HAIR

If you plan to get a haircut, it is advised not to do it the same day, to avoid getting a bad haircut and then not being able to do anything about it. In most cases, get it cut 2-3 days before.

WHAT TO WEAR

Typically, simple is best. Avoid intricate patterns and sheens / shines on clothing that can cause a moire effect that is difficult to deal with in photography because it creates digital artifacts. Solid colors are good as the less busy your clothes are, the more the focus stays on you. Your clothes should complement you, not outshine you. Same thing for jewelry and other accessories. Avoid big logos and patterns.

For actors and theatrical looks, bring layers like a jacket to put over your top. Also, black and white are fine but consider that most people use them. Bring colorful options too so we might also create looks that differentiate you.

For business attire, consider wearing what you would wear to meet an important client.

For model digitals, form-fitting dark clothes are best.

If you are doing multiple looks, bring several options and we can discuss them.

SLEEP WELL & HYDRATE

Get a good night’s sleep the night before and hydrate well several days before, if you can. These are helpful to your skin looking its best. While there is Photoshop, getting it right in-camera first is a best practice.

SMILING IN YOUR HEADSHOT

Unless it is a theatrical actor headshot, in most cases it is recommended you smile in your headshot. Don’t be afraid to practice in a bathroom mirror. Turn on all the lights, pose straight on and at a slight side angle and practice your smiling – with teeth. Get a feel for how much smile is ideal so you can pull it off during the session. Practice does make perfect.

TRY TO HAVE FUN

It’s a photography session. Try to have fun. Yes, it is proven the headshots can have a subconscious or even direct impact on whether someone chooses to work with you or not. But that’s why we’ll plan and review as we go. So we can be sure the results are great, before you leave the studio. Besides, making it a relaxed and enjoyable experience will help the photos turn out that much better.
